Apprenticeships
– This is a five year program with:
- Minimum 8000 hours of on-the-job training
- Minimum 180 hours of classroom instruction – per year
- Starting wage is 37% of journeyman wage (advancement corresponds with satisfactory progress on both on-the-job reports and academics.
- Probationary period is 1000 hours (which is generally your first year of training)
- Average cost per year is $700.00 for tuition and text and workbooks. (at time of indenture you will also be required to purchase your tools which is approximately $300.00 – $400.00).

- Minimum 160 hours of classroom instruction – per year
- Starting wage is 60% of Wireman wage (advancement corresponds with satisfactory progress on both on-the-job reports and academics.
- Probationary period is 1000 hours (which is generally your first year of training)
- Average cost per year is $700.00 for tuition and text and workbooks. (at time of indenture you will also be required to purchase your tools which is approximately $300.00 – $400.00).

Job Description
Apprentices will layout, assemble, install, and connect all electrical apparatus, equipment, fixtures, and wiring used in electrical systems on renovation, maintenance and new construction projects. Also, the installation, connection, and troubleshooting of electrical machinery, control devices, industrial equipment, and signal communications systems is a large part of the apprenticeship program.
Employers
Electrical contractors are affiliated with IBEW Local Union 64. Contractors are not necessarily based in the Mahoning county area. All job assignments should be viewed as temporary because there is no guarantee of continuous employment. Electricians do not have "seniority or tenure".
Working Conditions
Physical strength and agility are an absolute necessity for the kinds of work that are performed. You must be willing to work in all types of weather as much of the work is performed outdoors.
Jurisdiction
Reliable transportation is an absolute necessity. Local 64's jurisdiction covers all of Mahoning County and parts of Trumbull and Columbiana counties. There is no travel compensation within Local 64's jurisdiction.

Training
Length of apprenticeship is either three or five years, depending on the program. On-the-job training is provided through the Electrical Contractors. Classroom instruction is provided approximately one night a week during the evening.
Wages
The rate of pay for apprentices is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between Local 64 and the Contractors. Apprentice pay rates are based on a predetermined percentage of the journeyman's pay rate.
Fringe Benefits
There is a Health and Welfare plan which your employer contributes to, on your behalf. After a probationary period, there is a Pension program that is also contributed to, on your behalf, by the employer. There are no paid sick days, vacations, etc… When you work, you get paid. When you don't work, you are not paid.
Competition
During a given selection period, 100 to 200 applications are received. Dependent upon demand, selection and placement of apprentices is limited to between 8 and 20 people.
Cost
You are required to purchase your own hand tools and pay for a portion of school tuition, text and instructional workbooks. These costs range from approximately $600 - $700 per year.
